Wedding photography is one of the most important aspects of your wedding day. It captures all of the memories and emotions of your wedding day. But what does wedding photography include?
Typically, wedding photography includes coverage of the couple, whether that be a bride/groom, bride/bride, groom/groom (we don’t exclude) getting ready, the ceremony, the reception, and any other special events that are happening on the day, depending on the style and maybe even the religion of the wedding ceremony and reception.
Of course, that’s the bare minimum you should expect from a wedding photographer.
Being present and being able to technically take a photo is perhaps the easiest part of wedding photography.
The hard part is knowing where to be, how to capture the various fleeting moments and memories that make up your wedding day and how to make the people being captured on camera feel comfortable, at ease and happy.
This is something Melbourne-based wedding photographer Simon James knows all about.
Through his business, Simon James Photography, Simon has captured 1224 weddings (at last count).
In this article, he reveals just how extensive his coverage of your wedding day could be.
Wedding Photography: More than just rocking up with a camera
There are few honours greater than being entrusted with capturing someone’s wedding day.
Despite having captured over 1200 weddings over the last 30 years, there’s still a sense of excitement and anticipation that I feel whenever I’m capturing a wedding, and because of the importance of the role I play, it’s an honour I take very seriously.
That’s why, for me at least, I consider the biggest inclusions I can offer to a couple who are getting married through my wedding photography service is emotional comfort and support.
This day is not about me.
I don’t tell you how to structure your wedding day to suit my photographic preferences.
I want you to plan your perfect day, tell me what the most important aspects of that day are and leave the photography to me.
It’s my job to capture the unique aspects of your day and the moments and memories that matter most to you.
Camera Chameleon: Wedding photography that changes to suit your people and your day
Whether it’s my gay alter-ego Bruce, or my happy-go-lucky self as Simon, 30 years of shooting weddings has taught me that I need to be able to adapt to my surroundings.
When it comes to your wedding day, I am the person you and your people need me to be.
A big part of my role on the day is to read the emotions of the people around me.
Whether it’s a bridesmaid who looks like they are lacking in self-confidence and needs a pick-me-up, a family member who needs to be told where and when to be there for their family shot, or simply blending into the background and letting it all unfold naturally, I pride myself on being able to be the person the day requires.
Person First, Wedding Photographer Second
Most importantly, I try and maintain a level of humanity when working at your wedding.
I try to be tuned into the wants and needs of you and your partner first and your bridal party and guests as the day progresses.
The important thing is that everyone is having a great time. When that’s happening, there’s plenty of great opportunities to snap really amazing photos.
As an added bonus, my camera bag is packed full of goodies that may be required throughout the day.
Safety pins, needle-and-thread are in there for the on the go repairs.
Does someone suddenly have a splitting headache? Jump in and grab yourself a panadol or a Nurofen.
Forgot to bring water? H20 is ready to go.
